Frequently Asked Questions
What equipment does an off-grid solar system require?
An off-grid solar system requires several components to function properly, including solar panels, a solar charge controller, inverter(s), a battery for energy storage, a mounting and racking system, as well as wiring, cables, and fuses to connect everything securely.
Why are my solar panels underproducing power?
Solar panels may underperform due to various factors, with environmental conditions being the most common. Indirect sunlight, high temperatures, cloudy skies, and the accumulation of dirt or stains on the surface glass can all reduce their efficiency and overall performance. Regular cleaning and proper positioning can help mitigate these issues.
How should I connect solar panels in my electrical circuit - series or parallel?
Solar panels can be connected in series or parallel configurations to meet the specific size and power requirements of your electrical circuit. In a series connection, the operating voltage of each panel adds up, while the system current remains the same as that of a single panel. In a parallel connection, the operating current of each panel adds up, while the system voltage remains the same as that of a single panel. For optimal power output and to meet the system's requirements, a combination of both series and parallel connections can be used depending on your setup. In series: the operating voltage output adds up, while the system current output is the same as that of one panel. In parallel: the operating current output will add up, while the system voltage output will be the same as the output of one solar panel. To achieve optimum power output and system rating for your power system, you can use both parallel and series connections.
How many solar panels do I need?
To determine how many solar panels you need, start by calculating the power load required for your system. Power is measured in watts, while capacity is typically measured in watt-hours, which is calculated by multiplying the power output in watts by the number of hours of operation, then adding a safety factor of 1.5 to 2. It’s recommended to size your battery bank first based on the minimum required capacity, and then decide on the necessary input power and the number of panels accordingly.
Will this panel produce power in overcast conditions?
Yes, it will! This Renogy solar panel, built with high-quality materials, continues to generate power even during cloudy weather. However, please note that power conversion will be lower compared to sunny days.
Do solar panels require maintenance? Can I wash my solar panels?
Solar panels generally require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance. Dirt and stains that accumulate on the surface or in the corners can reduce sunlight absorption, leading to lower efficiency. To clean your solar panels, simply use a microfiber cloth, glass cleaner, and water to remove any debris and keep them functioning at their best.

Renogy 100 watt solar panel review

Posted by Robert Whitman on Aug 12th 2024

I purchased two of these panels in Jan 2024. I have used them during winter and now almosts for a full Canadian Summer. Solid performance keeping two 50 A 12V DC life Po 4 bat and one 12 amp charged daily. These panels perform even on cloudy days and keep up demand daily for home WiFi Home phone line and one smart Tv with sound bar. I will purchase 2 more and switch up to the Renogy 40 A mppt charger. All around great quality and price.

    Solar pannels

Posted by Jim on Jun 21st 2023

I made pvc frames to mount them on as I do not have them permanently mounted. They produced 10.5 amps through my Renogy solar controller to charge my new Lithium batteries. 2 day delivery across Canada to the B.C. Great products and service.

    Elation

Posted by Elation on May 22nd 2023

There is no particularly significant drop in the efficiency of the solar panels when there is shading. It is feasible.
