1. What type of alternator is this on-board battery charger compatible with?
This battery charger is compatible with both traditional and smart alternators. However, since standard/traditional alternator has a fixed voltage when charging, while smart alternator has a controlled charging output based on operating conditions, it is required to connect the charger to the smart alternator through the Vehicle Ignition Port by the IGN Signal Wire comes with the package.
2. What will happen if the service battery is fully charged?
This Renogy's DC to DC MPPT on-board Battery Charger has a built-in Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR), thanks to which the charger will Trickle Charge the service battery and maintain its fully charged status, and will also Trickle Charge the starting battery via solar panels. The VSR also ensures reliable isolation between the starting battery and service battery, avoiding charging interference.
3. What types of battery does the charger support?
This controller supports Gel, AGM, Flooded, and Lithium battery, but please make sure to set the correct battery type once it is installed. For battery settings please refer to the Manual Book on page 12&15.
4. How do I set the battery since there is no display screen?
To change the battery type you will need to press the push button that is located on the PV+ and ALT+ side of the DCDC, then continue to press the button and the LED will display different colors with each representing a single type of battery. Please refer to the manual on page 15 for Battery Type LED.
5. Notes 
1. Do not reverse the polarity since the reverse polarity of the battery connections can cause injury and damage to the device.
2. When connecting the charger and the battery, make sure the battery poles are clean when connecting the terminals, select a sufficient cross-section for the connection cable, tighten the nuts and bolts with proper torque as loose connections may cause overheating.
3. Be careful not to over-torque the terminals on the DCDC as over-torquing may cause irreparable damage (Do not exceed 16 N-m / 3.3 ft-lb).
4. Use the following cable colors:
Red: positive connection
Black: negative connection"
5.5. If the battery charger is connected to the starting battery and solar panels at the same time, the maximum charging current will be 15A for each; if the battery charger only connects one of the two DC inputs, the maximum charging current will be 30A.

30A solar+DC-DC charger quick test

Upon reception, I tested the DC charger with a LFP 50Ah battery by pluging an external DC power source alternatively on both inputs (solar and alternator). The charger behaved as expected and extracted the maximal current that my external power supply could deliver (limited to 10A for the test). Il varied the input voltage to check the MPPT "signature" on the solar input and the voltage trigger level for the alternator input. All is perfectly as expected. I must mention that I did test only to 10A since I did not have proper cable to go higher. I cannot confirm that the charger will go up to 30A but I don't have any reason to believe that it won't be able to respect its specifications. At 10A the efficiency seemed very good (~95%) and the charger did not even got warm.

Easy to install and wire up. Instruction manual is quite good. Linked with the lithium battery and my vehicles smart alternator - unit appears to be working well.

Bought a full system consisting of 1. Renogy Lithium-Iron Phosphate Battery 12 Volt 170Ah 2. 20A AC-TO-DC LFP PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER 3. DCC30S 12V 30A DUAL INPUT DC-DC ON-BOARD BATTERY CHARGER WITH MPPT 4. 500A BATTERY MONITOR with Shunt Today l have just finished installing and testing the system and everything worked as expected. Easy to follow installing and calibration instructions so l did not need any specialist. I installed this system in a Ford Escape 2010 which l turned into a camper so now l am off grid capable. Super happy with the purchase.

Enjoying this product so far. Very easy install. Nice strong lugs for the cable attachment. Looking forward to the development of a monitor so I can see how much power is being produced. Right now all I can see is that it’s working as designed, switching seamlessly between alternator and solar inputs as they are available. Sort of wishing I had bought the 50A so I could get a little more charge out of my alternator. At least with the 30A I know I’m not stressing it.

DCC30S 12V for Eurovan solar

Hi, the build quality is good. Nice touch to include the ring terminals (#4 AWG in case you were wondering). Still waiting for my LiFePO4 battery to arrive. Two items worth mentioning: 1- Only supports up to 25V from solar. This prevents you from running most 18V panels in series. Parallel setups are OK of course but series installation gives you a few more options. For me, I may need to mix and match panels because of space constraints on my roof (skylights get in the way). 2- Unclear if I can connect and use an existing shore power AC/DC that puts out 13.8V through this battery charger, using the ALT+ input (connection to vehicle alternator). The specifications would suggest this should work. It should be quite comparable to the alternator output. Why? Going through the DCC unit would prevent overcharging since this old AC/DC was for lead acid and does not have a Lion charge mode. Note: I am running a BMS that I'll program to prevent that scenario as well. That should be technically sufficient. Perhaps that is why this isn't a documented feature. Hoping the install goes well and without any surprises!
